Ruthie’s Double Blessing
It was a busy day at the Cherry Hill Women’s Center as usual. The parking lot was full and people were lined up at the door. Ruthie was one of the mothers who had made an appointment that day for an abortion. She was afraid of the impact her pregnancy would have on her family and her life dreams. Ten years earlier, Ruthie, her mother and her grandmother, emigrated from Liberia to America to prosper in the land of opportunity. A decade later, they wait in line at an abortion center…not where the women thought they would ever find themselves.
While Ruthie was inside being evaluated, The Helpers waved her grandmother over to explain that we had help and support for her granddaughter. Visibly troubled she took the pamphlet back to her car to look it over. At this time, Ruthie, looking distraught, came back out to kneel outside the building. The clinic had just revealed that she was pregnant with twins.
This would cost extra.
An alarm went off in her head. “I have to get this over with…I can’t have one baby, let alone two!”
A couple next to her who were also discerning their reasons to have an abortion, offered her a pamphlet we had given them and told her there were people out front who wanted to help. She viewed the pamphlet and went to talk it over with her grandmother. She felt it was a sign from God when she saw her grandmother looking at the same pamphlet! Ruthie couldn’t go back into the clinic.
She had a change of heart and they went home to tell her parents.
When she called and met with Teri she asked why God would give her such a burden. Teri suggested that God was calling her to be a role model for her generation. She is beautiful, kind and an excellent student. She could teach her peers about the importance of life, love and responsibility. Her eyes lit up! She desired to be a woman that would inspire others!
She then showed Teri the names of her two babies written in pen on the inside of her wrist, Grace and Faith. “I hope they’re girls.” We then connected her with Options for Women, a pregnancy center in Cherry Hill which assigned a counselor to her to help throughout the pregnancy.
It’s not easy being a mom to twins, but Ruthie had the courage and love to say yes to life for her little beauties!
