Desiree’s Story
This month we want to tell you about Desiree.
Desiree was referred to us by Joseph’s House in Camden, an organization that we often partner with. The shelter was full and Desiree was pregnant with nowhere to go. She and the baby’s father, Bruce, had been sleeping outside a hockey rink in the freezing cold and snow. Despite her living circumstances, Desiree was still working as a part-time waitress at a diner.
The Helpers sprung into action, placing them temporarily in a motel near her job.
Bruce very much wanted to work, but he had no ID or birth certificate. He had a bike and was willing to ride to a job if he could secure one. Not having a birth certificate makes getting photo ID a complicated ordeal. He had discharge papers from a trip to the hospital and these had his name, date of birth and he address he used at Joseph’s House. Mary Anne, who is our go-to on these issues, used these to start the process of securing an ID for him. When he finally did receive his photo ID in the mail, he was so happy he had tears in his eyes!
When we found a place for them to live in Gloucester City we agreed to pay one and a half months rent until Bruce could find a job and take over payment. He found both a full time job as well as part time work and is now providing for his family. Bruce’s next challenge is to learn to read and write. Teri has offered to teach him.
Since the couple lives near where our Helpers Academy is located, Desiree has done some volunteer work for us in the office. She continues to work at the diner after giving birth to a beautiful, healthy baby named Giovanni.
All we did was provide this family with the help and support they needed, and they did the rest! This is what we love to see at Helpers NJ. Thank you for continuing to support us financially, with your donations, and in prayer. It gives us the opportunity to help those who really need it.
“My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.” John 15:12.
