Catherine’s Story
This month we want to tell you a story about a woman named Catherine. When we met Catherine she was about to be homeless and pregnant. She had been living in an apartment with, and caring for, her wheelchair bound mother for sometime. However she was quickly faced with being homeless when the apartment manager told her abruptly that he would not allow her to stay there anymore.
This is when she heard about us through a friend and reached out. Thankfully the Helpers have a wonderful working relationship with Haddon Hall rooming houses and we were able to secure a room for her immediately. That was only a temporary solution though, because the rooms there are for single occupants only and she was expecting.
Cathy had a monthly income but it was not enough to cover a security deposit for an apartment. The Helpers not only helped her financially but were also able to connect her with a couple of other agencies that helped as well.
A problem arose when she placed a deposit on an apartment and was scammed. She didn’t get the apartment and wouldn’t have gotten her money back if Helper Mary Anne hadn’t gone with her and confronted the “landlord” and insisted on the money back. Luckily she quickly found another apartment which we helped furnish. We also gave her the baby items needed for her son and after only two days in the apartment baby Khalid was born weighing 6 lbs. 6 oz. Mommy and baby settled nicely into their new home and were doing well.
Recently though, Cathy called to ask for one more favor. She wanted to see if Mary Anne would write a letter for her because she is trying to regain custody of another son who is now in Georgia with her cousin. The cousin was legally supposed to allow visitation but has refused and is keeping the child from his mother. Mary Anne will continue to work and advocate for Cathy who has certaintly taken steps to regain independence and provide a life for her children.
Thank you for your continued support. It is because of your donations, prayers and kind words that we can continue to help these women choose life for their children.
Psalm 127:3-5
“Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in one’s youth”
