Baby Chance Gets a Second Chance at Life
It was like any other morning outside of the Cherry Hill Women’s Center on Kings Highway. The Helpers lined the sidewalk in front of the building and began to fervently pray for the workers inside and the women who would walk through the doors. A young lady caught The Helpers eye this fall morning. She was on her way inside and they approached her. A brief conversation revealed that the woman brought her cousin, Colby, to the clinic for an abortion. Colby, who traveled from Trenton, already had a ten-year-old daughter and this unplanned pregnancy was more than she could handle. The Helpers asked her cousin to bring Colby out so they could explain to her the variety of ways they could help.
Colby came walking out.The Helpers were ecstatic.
They explained to her how they could help get her back on track financially, and help care for both of her children. “We told her we would gradually move her forward so she could feel more dignity and self worth as a mother,” said Helper Teri.
In just a few minutes, Colby was convinced.
The Helpers promised to do as much or as little, for as long as needed. She cried for a while saying it “would be such a leap of faith” to keep the child. She explained the father would be angry because he gave her the money for the abortion. The Helpers said they would be her family and her support through the entire process and after the baby was born….And they showed her this first hand by writing a check THAT DAY for her bills and housing to cover what was due. They also gave the women money to buy lunch to celebrate the baby before heading back to Trenton.
What is so great about our Helpers is their unconditional love and support for moms like Colby. They did not just send her on her way and hope for the best – they showed with their actions that day – they mean what they say. After that morning our Helpers stayed in regular contact with Colby and her daughter Chaizaya. They followed up with regular visits and calls.
Through your support they were able to pay for the walls to be wallpapered and painted, turning a storage room into a brand new nursery.
They provided Colby with a donated crib and rocking chair to create a beautiful new space for her baby. Our Helpers also paid for newborn photos from the hospital and for some new clothing for sweet baby Chance.
On February 25, 2015 Chance was born at Colby’s house in her bedroom, while the ambulance was on the way. He weighed a healthy 7 pounds, 8 ounces. Chance is such a fitting name for a baby that was brought into this world through God’s grace and given another chance at life.
God is good.
Thank you for your continued prayers and support. We are only able to do this work because of God, our Helpers and your support.
